Although I now live in Alabama, I grew up in a small town in New York State which still has its own telephone company. We didn't get direct-dial long distance service until the mid-1970's, and we (and about 8 other families) were on what was known as "the party line down by the lake". My folks still rent their phone from the phone company, the same black wall model that's been hanging there since the house was built in 1965.
